You Can Get Squamous Skin Cancer on Your Feet

It is widely thought that skin cancer appears only on certain areas of the body like the back, shoulders, face and arms. These are areas that get the most sun exposure, or exposure to cancer causing materials. We wear clothes and shoes so people don't frequently get skin cancer on unexposed areas. Except, if they have gotten skin cancer from a love of tanning, where the skin on the whole body has been repeatedly subjected to the damage of solar rays.

Skin cancers caused by contaminants have been usually found in older people who have already been repeatedly exposed to excessive sun rays, carcinogens at the work place, or otherwise, over their lifetimes. It is a widely held view that men over 50 get more squamous skin cancer than anyone. For example, car mechanics have high occurrences of skin cancers on their hands and arms from being exposed to oil, brake cleaner and other harsh chemicals.

However, we are coming to find that some of these scenarios are just not true anymore. As the way we live changes, so does the way people get cancer. For instance, you can get squamous cell skin cancer on your feet. Slowly, it is becoming more commonly known that skin cancer is found on the feet and other areas of the body that were before designated not prone to cancer. The earth is more polluted than it used to be even 30 years ago. A persons own back yard has probably had oil dumped in it from a car.

I am not a doctor, but I believe some of the reasons people are getting cancer on their feet more than in the past is due to some factors that may go unnoticed. For instance:

  • Children go around barefoot all the time on newly paved roads and get their feet black from tar.
  • The ground is polluted with cancer causing chemicals from people dumping them on the ground everywhere overtime, for generations and generations.
  • One thing I know for sure that is causing cancer to show up on feet is the trend of wearing flip flops all the time. I wore and still sometimes wear flip flops with jeans, dresses, shorts, and everything else any time of year. It is a comfy fashion, but I believe it has a down fall. This makes it so the tops of your feet are exposed to the sun all year round. Even people who apply sunscreen religiously don't apply it to the tops of their feet in a mild winter in California or Florida.

Now, with the amount of crude oil in the ocean and surrounding land in the United States, there may be more cases of squamous cell skin cancer and many other cancers in humans and animals.

The contamination from the crude oil surging into the Gulf of Mexico may spread around the world, we do not know. If there comes to be more cases of squamous cell cancer because of this oil spill it will definitely be one of the lesser problems concerning the spill to be sure, but still, cancer of any kind is a health risk that should be addressed.

Have you, or anyone you know, had a squamous cell carcinoma come back after removal?

  • Yes, I have seen squamous cell cancer return in the same spot after removal of a previous tumor.
  • No, I have had no experience with squamous cell carcinomas returning.
