What is a Medical Abbreviation?

A medical abbreviation, is an abbreviation of a medical term which is a long medical word used by doctors, medical assistants and nurses, or anyone else taking notes of a patient's symptoms or writing reports about the patients care and progress.

Abbreviations are helpful to use because medial terms can be very long to write out and may have to be written over and over again throughout a day of patient care. Abbreviations are used for many other words and meanings for many things in our everyday lives as well, not just for medical terms.

It can be quite confusing at first learning what all abbreviations mean when you are a new medical student or patient or caregiver. It takes awhile before you will recognize abbreviations right away, but persistence is key to remembering anything. If you are training to be in the medical field, my advise would be to just keep memorizing a few medical abbreviations at a time and before you know it you will have memorized whole areas of medical abbreviations and medical terms in your head. You can also use learning tools to help with memorization like making medical abbreviation games, or flash cards, to help learn medical terminology and abbreviations.

Listed below are some of the most common medical abbreviations that people run into at work in the health care setting, or at the doctor in patient care notes or medicine dosing instructions. This can help serve as a quick reference to some of the most common medical abbreviations for former or current patients, caretakers, medical students or even health care providers, who are in a pinch about what an abbreviation means.
